Batch Feed Vs Continuous Feed Garbage Disposal

batch feed vs continuous feed garbage disposal
Before you buy a garbage disposal, you have to get one thing straight.

You need to decide whether to get a batch or continuous feed model.

In this post article, we will explain how it works and then list down the pros and cons for each feed.

Batch Feed

As the name implied, this feed operates by batches. What this means is that you load the waste food in batches into the disposer.

The first step involves filling up the chamber with scrap foods. When it’s full, you placed a special plug or stopper on top of the sink drain (or mouth of the disposal unit).

Then you twist the stopper in place and push it down to activate the unit. Once the grinding has completed, you lift the stopper to stop the unit. If you have more waste food to grind, you repeat the cycle again.

Pros

1. Unit can only run with the stopper in place. So it’s safe as outlined in the scenarios below:

  • No chance for any utensil (such as spoon or fork) dropping into the unit during operation. It prevent your unit from damaged or cause any injury to you.

  • It protected you from putting your fingers deep into the grinding chamber. Such unforeseen action can hurt your fingers or hand.

  • Young children could not put their small fingers into the running unit.

2. You don’t have to install an electric or air switch. And for those who intend to install an air switch, this also means you avoid drilling a hole on the countertop.

3. The stopper covers the mouth of garbage disposal during operation. So, it reduces the noise level.

Cons

1. If you’ve a large amount of waste food, it will take a longer time to grind them. You may need to repeat the cycle a few times.

2. Batch feed garbage disposals are not popular with household owners. So there are limited models available in the market. As a result, you’ve a lesser choice when selecting the product you want.

3. They tend to have a bigger size than continuous feed units.

4. They are more expensive when compared with continuous feed models.

5. If you happen to misplace the stopper, you cannot start the unit till you find it.

Continuous Feed

This feed run when you turn on the wall switch (or press the air switch). While it is running, you can throw in the waste food into the unit for grinding. You can continue to do so as long as the unit is in operation.

Pros

1. Suitable for large amount of waste food. You can throw in scrap foods when the unit is running. As a result, you complete the grinding faster.

2. The price is cheaper when compared with batch feed units.

3. Most household are using this feed, so lots of models in the market. Thus, you got more options to choose from.

Cons

Since the drain sink is not cover during operation, there exists a certain risk. You may hurt your hand or fingers by accident. And the dropping of foreign objects could damage the disposer. When you use it, you must take the necessary precautions.

Summary

Based on what we’re discussed above, there are 3 main factors for your consideration:

  • The amount of waste food you’ve on a daily basis. Or how often do you cook?

  • What is your budget like?

  • Do you need the safety features? Do you have small children in the household?

Most consumers use continuous feed garbage disposals because they are fast and convenient. But, household with small children prefer batch feed model due to its safety features.

Whether you choose continuous or batch feed garbage disposal, both have the same functions. You just need to choose one that suit your kitchen household needs.
